Bituminous materials, also known as asphalt mixtures, are amongst the oldest engineering materials. Their use as binding and waterproofing materials can be dated back to BC, and later the Romans developed roads in many parts of their empire, marking the first global use of bituminous binders in road paving technology.
It also provides a basic understanding of the nature and properties of the material ingredients which form bituminous mixtures used for pavement construction in the UK, and offers guidance for the selection of those ingredients.
